Enjoining what is right—the truth with which Allah sent His Messenger—and forbidding what is wrong—all forms of religious innovation and wickedness that oppose that truth—are indeed among the greatest obligations and finest acts of obedience. Indeed, this is the path of the religious leaders and spiritual masters whose example we follow in this regard.
Allah Most High says:
“Let there be among you a group who call to goodness, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. It is they who will be successful.”
This is the verse cited as evidence that spiritual masters are to be followed in matters of religion. Whoever does not enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong is neither a spiritual master nor someone whose example should be followed.
