Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And it is authentically reported in Sahīh Muslim, on the authority of Suhayb, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“When the people of Paradise enter Paradise and the people of the Fire enter the Fire, a caller will announce, ‘O people of Paradise, Allah has made you a promise that He wishes to fulfil for you.’ They will say, ‘What is it? Has He not brightened our faces, made our scales heavy, admitted us to Paradise, and protected us from the Fire?’” He continued, “Then the veil will be lifted, and they will look upon Him. He will have given them nothing dearer to them than looking upon Him; this is the ‘more.’”

It has also been widely transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the authentic hadith collections that he said:

“You will see your Lord just as you see the moon on the night when it is full, having no difficulty seeing Him.”

And that the people said, “O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?” He said, “Do you have any difficulty seeing the sun in a clear sky, with no clouds obscuring it?” They said, “No.” He said, “Do you have any difficulty seeing the moon in a clear sky, with no clouds obscuring it?” They said, “No.” He said, “You will indeed see your Lord just as you see the sun and the moon.”

Thus he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, likened the act of seeing to the act of seeing; he did not liken the One seen to the things seen. For the servants cannot encompass Allah in knowledge, nor can their vision comprehend Him. As He Most High says:

“Vision does not comprehend Him, but He comprehends all vision.”

A number of the early generations and scholars have stated that “comprehension” means encompassing. Thus the servants will see Allah Most High with their own eyes, but they will not encompass Him. These and similar matters are among those that Allah and His Messenger have told us.

And He Most High says by way of negation:

“There is nothing like Him.”

“So do not set up rivals to Allah.”
