al-Mutawakkil to Baghdad, was accused of heresy, and was counted by people among the philosophers—I do not know whether he said this or not. Al-Junayd, by contrast, was predominantly characterized by uprightness and adherence to the Prophet’s example, although everyone’s statements may be accepted or rejected except those of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. No one other than the Messenger is protected from error. Nevertheless, teachers whose paths are known to be sound are understood not to intend meanings whose falsehood is self-evident according to reason and religion.
