the two eyelids.
Allah Most High has said:
“Allah has certainly heard the statement of those who said, ‘Allah is poor, while we are rich.’”
And so on to the end of the verse. If this is what He says of those who described Him as needing their wealth to give it to the poor, what would He say of those who made His very essence dependent upon His creatures, such that, were it not for His creatures, His essence would disperse, scatter, and cease to exist, just as the light of the eye disperses, scatters, and ceases to exist when the eyelid is absent?
He has said in His Book:
“Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease to be. And if they should cease…”
The verse continues. Who, then, holds the heavens and the earth?
He has also said in His Book:
“And among His signs is that the heaven and the earth stand by His command.”
The verse continues. He has also said:
“He raised the heavens without pillars that you can see.”
And He has said:
“His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not weary Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
“Does not weary Him” means that it neither burdens Him nor causes Him hardship. It is also stated in the hadith—the hadith of Abū Dāwūd:
“The heavens, the earth, and all that lies between them, in relation to the Kursī, are nothing but a ring cast upon a desert plain; and the Kursī, in relation to the Throne, is like that ring in the desert.”
He has also said in His Book:
“They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection.”
The verse continues. It is established in the authentic hadith collections, in reports from Abū Hurayrah, Ibn Umar, and Ibn Masūd:
“Allah holds the heavens and the earth in His Hand.”
Thus, He in whose grasp are the heavens and the earth, whose Kursī encompasses the heavens and the earth, and whom preserving them does not weary
