For they say:

“The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three gods, yet they are one god.”

The one clothed in Christ’s human nature is the Son. They also say:

“They are existence, knowledge, life, and power.”

They are answered:

“If these are attributes, they are not gods. Nor can the one clothed in Christ conceivably be a god unless he is the Father. If, however, they are substances, they necessarily cannot be one god, for three substances cannot be a single substance.”

They sometimes illustrate this by our saying, “Zayd, who is knowledgeable, capable, and alive”: his being knowledgeable is not the same as his being capable.

If, then, they are told:

“None of this precludes his being a single entity possessing multiple attributes, yet this is not what you maintain. Moreover, if the one united with Christ is a god, he cannot be an attribute; rather, he must be the one possessing the attribute. Yet you do not maintain that. Thus, you do not affirm what is true, and what you affirm is not true.”

Allah Most High has said:

“O People of the Scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion, and say nothing about Allah except the truth.”

The Christians are therefore bewildered and contradictory. If they make the hypostasis an attribute, Christ cannot be a god; if they make it a substance, God cannot be one. They wish to make Christ Allah, to make him the son of Allah, and to make the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
