Moreover, “miraculous gifts granted to Allah’s friends” must arise from faith and mindfulness of Allah. Whatever arises from disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience belongs to the extraordinary feats of Allah’s enemies, not to the miraculous gifts of His friends.
Thus, if a person’s extraordinary feats do not occur through prayer, Quran recitation, remembrance of Allah, night prayer, and supplication, but occur instead through associating partners with Allah—such as invoking the dead or the absent—or through wickedness, disobedience, and consuming forbidden things, such as snakes, wasps, beetles, blood, and other impurities, or through singing and dancing, especially with non-mahram women and beardless youths; if his extraordinary powers weaken when he hears the Quran and grow stronger when he hears Satan’s pipes, so that he dances long into the night, yet when prayer time comes he prays sitting down or pecks through his prayer like a rooster; and if he hates listening to the Quran, recoils from it, and forces himself to listen, having no love for it and finding in it neither spiritual relish nor delight in his state of ecstasy, while he loves listening to whistling and clapping and experiences ecstatic feelings through them—then these are satanic states. He is among those encompassed by the words of Allah Most High:
“Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil who becomes his companion.”
The Quran is the remembrance of the Most Merciful. Allah Most High says:
“But whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a life of hardship, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”
“He will say, ‘My Lord, why have You raised me up blind when I used to see?’”
“He will say, ‘So it is: Our signs came to you, but you forgot them; and so today you will be forgotten.’”
This means: you abandoned acting upon them. Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, said, “Allah has guaranteed that whoever reads His Book and acts upon its teachings will neither go astray in this world nor suffer misery in the Hereafter.” He then recited this verse.
