but rejects what it is told about many people because, in its view, they are not among Allah’s allies. Others suppose that anyone who displays any extraordinary phenomenon is an ally of Allah. Both views are mistaken. Thus, you find the latter saying that the polytheists and the People of the Book have supporters who help them fight the Muslims, and that these supporters are allies of Allah.
The former deny that there could be anyone among them who displays extraordinary phenomena. The correct position is the third: they do have supporters of their own kind, not allies of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. As Allah Most High says:
“O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. Whoever among you takes them as allies is indeed one of them.”
Devils attach themselves to these worshippers and ascetics who are not among Allah’s pious allies who follow the Quran and Sunnah. Each may therefore display extraordinary feats suited to his condition. However, their feats counteract one another, and when a firmly established ally of Allah Most High is present, he nullifies their feats. Each of them inevitably exhibits falsehood—whether through ignorance or deliberately—and sin corresponding to the condition of the devils attached to them. Through this, Allah distinguishes His pious allies from those allies of the devils who resemble them. Allah Most High says:
“Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?”
“They descend upon every sinful liar.”
A “liar” is one who habitually lies, and “sinful” means wicked.
Among the strongest means of reinforcing satanic states is listening to singing and musical instruments. This is the listening practiced by the polytheists. Allah Most High says:
