Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The miraculous favors granted to Allah’s allies come only through the blessing of following His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They therefore fall, in reality, within the miracles of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. These include the splitting of the moon; the pebbles glorifying Allah in his palm; trees coming to him; the palm trunk yearning for him; his description of Jerusalem on the night of the Ascension; his accounts of past and future events; his bringing the mighty Book; and his multiplying food and drink on many occasions.

During the Battle of the Trench, for example, he fed the army to their fill from a pot of food without its contents diminishing, as related in the well-known hadith of Umm Salamah. During the expedition to Khaybar, he quenched the army’s thirst from a waterskin without its contents diminishing. In the year of Tabūk, he filled the army’s vessels from a small quantity of food without it diminishing, although they numbered some 30,000. Water flowed from between his fingers on several occasions, providing enough for everyone with him—as at al-Hudaybiyah, where they numbered some 1,400 or 1,500. He also restored Abū Qatādah’s eye after it had fallen onto his cheek, and it became the better of his two eyes.

[When he sent Muhammad ibn Maslamah to kill Kaʿb ibn al-Ashraf, Muhammad fell and broke his leg. The Prophet stroked it, and it healed.] (*)

He fed 130 men with roast meat, cutting off a piece for each of them and making two portions of it. They all ate from it, and some remained afterward. There was also the debt of thirty wasqs that ʿAbdullāh, Jābir’s father, owed to a Jewish man. Jābir said:

“He instructed the creditor to take all the dates in settlement of what was owed to him, but he refused. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then walked among the date palms and said to Jābir, ‘Harvest the dates for him.’ He paid him the thirty wasqs in full, and seventeen wasqs remained.”

There are many such examples. I have collected about a thousand miracles.

Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd said (pp. 96–98): It is well known that this happened to Abdullāh ibn Atīk, may Allah be pleased with him, when he killed Ibn Abī al-Huqayq. This may therefore be a slip of the pen. Sahīh al-Bukhārī records that al-Barā ibn Āzib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent some men of the Ansār against Abū Rāfi, the Jew, appointing Abdullāh ibn Atīk as their commander. Abū Rāfi used to harm the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and assist others against him. He lived in a fortress of his in the Hijāz. When they approached it, the sun had set and people were returning with their grazing livestock. Abdullāh said to his companions, ‘Stay where you are. I will go ahead and approach the gatekeeper tactfully, hoping to gain entry.’ “He approached the gate, then covered himself with his garment as though relieving himself. The people had already entered, and the gatekeeper called out to him, ‘O servant of Allah! If you want to enter, come in, for I am about to close the gate.’ “Abdullāh said: ‘I entered and hid. Once everyone had entered, he closed the gate and hung the keys on a peg. I went over to the keys, took them, and unlocked the gate. Abū Rāfi used to have people gather with him for conversation at night, and he was in his upper rooms. When his evening companions had left, I went upstairs to him. Whenever I opened a door, I closed it behind me from the inside, thinking, “If the people become aware of me, they will not reach me before I kill him.” “‘I reached him and found him in a dark room among his family, but I did not know where in the room he was. I called, “Abū Rāfi!” He said, “Who is this?” I lunged towards the voice and struck him once with my sword, but I was so flustered that I achieved nothing. He cried out, so I left the room, waited a short while, and then went back in. I asked, “What is this noise, Abū Rāfi?” He replied, “Woe to your mother! A man in the room struck me with a sword just now.” “‘I struck him again, severely wounding him but not killing him. Then I thrust the point of the sword into his belly until it penetrated his back, and I knew that I had killed him. I began opening the doors one by one until I reached a stairway of his. I put my foot down, thinking I had reached the ground, and fell. It was a moonlit night. My lower leg broke, so I bound it with a turban and went on until I sat down at the gate. I said to myself, “I will not leave tonight until I know whether I have killed him.” “‘When the rooster crowed, a man announcing his death stood on the wall and said, “I announce the death of Abū Rāfi, the merchant of the people of the Hijāz.” I went to my companions and said, “Make haste to escape! Allah has killed Abū Rāfi.” “‘I reached the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and told him what had happened. He said, “Stretch out your leg.” I stretched it out, and he stroked it. It was as though I had never suffered any pain in it.’”
