and has forbidden squandering and stinginess, keeping one’s hand shackled to one’s neck, and stretching it out without restraint. He has forbidden killing a soul without right, adultery, and approaching an orphan’s property except in the best manner, until He says:
“The evil of all these things is detested by your Lord.”
He, glorified is He, does not love corruption, nor does He approve of disbelief for His servants.
The servant is commanded to turn continually to Allah Most High in repentance. Allah Most High says:
“Turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed.”
In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is reported to have said:
“O people, turn to your Lord in repentance. By Him in whose hand is my soul, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.”
In Sahīh Muslim, he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is reported to have said:
“A cloud comes over my heart, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness a hundred times a day.”
In the Sunan collections, Ibn ‘Umar said:
“In a single gathering, we would count the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying a hundred times—or he said, more than a hundred times—‘My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.’”
Allah, glorified is He, has commanded His servants to conclude their righteous deeds by seeking forgiveness. Thus, when the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had pronounced the salutation ending the prayer, he would seek forgiveness three times and say:
“O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.”
