worshipping Allah alone, and the greatest evil is associating partners with Him.
Allah Most High says:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills.”
He Most High also says:
“Among people are those who take others besides Allah as equals, loving them as they love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah.”
In the two Sahīh collections, Ibn Mas‘ūd, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, which sin is greatest?’ He said, ‘To set up a rival to Allah when He is the One who created you.’ I asked, ‘Then which?’ He said, ‘To kill your child for fear that he will share your food.’ I asked, ‘Then which?’ He said, ‘To commit adultery with your neighbour’s wife.’ Allah then revealed in confirmation of this:
‘And those who do not invoke another god besides Allah, nor kill a soul whom Allah has forbidden to be killed, except by right, nor commit adultery. Whoever does so will face a penalty. The punishment will be multiplied for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will remain in it forever, humiliated—except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds. And Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’”
He, glorified is He, has commanded justice, excellence in doing good, and giving to relatives, and has forbidden indecency, wrongdoing, and oppression. He has declared that He loves those who fear Him, those who do good, those who act justly, those who repeatedly repent, those who purify themselves, and those who fight in His cause in ranks as though they were a firmly joined structure.
He detests what He has forbidden, as He says in Surah Subhān:
“The evil of all these things is detested by your Lord.”
He has forbidden associating partners with Him and mistreating parents, and has commanded that relatives be given their due rights
