Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

blessings, not disbelief in Allah.

I said:

Moreover, even if gratitude were the opposite of disbelief in Allah, someone who abandons deeds while remaining grateful in his heart and with his tongue has fulfilled part of gratitude, including its foundation. Disbelief is established only when gratitude is entirely absent.

As Ahl al-Sunnah have said:

Someone who abandons the branches of faith does not become a disbeliever unless he abandons its foundation, which is belief. When something consists of branches and parts, the loss of its branches does not necessarily mean that its designation no longer applies—as with a person whose hand is cut off, or a tree some of whose branches are cut off.

Al-Sadr Ibn al-Murahhal said:

Your associates have disagreed with al-Hasan al-Basrī about calling a sinner ungrateful for blessings, just as they disagreed with the Khawārij about considering him a disbeliever in Allah.

Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn said:

My associates have not disagreed with al-Hasan on this. From whom among my associates are you reporting this? Rather, they permit calling a sinner ungrateful for blessings where revealed law applies that designation.

Ibn al-Murahhal said:

I merely thought that your associates had said this. My associates, however, have disagreed with al-Hasan on this.

Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn said:

Nor have your associates disagreed with him. For your associates
