As for gratitude, it is expressed only for favors bestowed, so in this respect it is narrower in scope than praise. Yet it is expressed through the heart, the hand, and the tongue, as the poet said:
Your favors have won you three things from me:
My hand, my tongue, and my hidden heart.
Hence the Most High says:
“Work, O family of David, in gratitude.”
Praise, however, is expressed only through the heart and the tongue. Thus, gratitude is broader in the forms it takes, while praise is broader in the reasons for which it is offered. This is reflected in the hadith:
“Praising Allah is the foremost part of gratitude; whoever does not praise Allah has not thanked Him.”
It is reported in the Sahīh that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Indeed, Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or takes a drink and praises Him for it.”
And Allah knows best.
