Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

One of the early Muslims also said: “If you give to a poor person and he says, ‘May Allah bless you,’ say, ‘May Allah bless you.’” He meant that if the recipient repays you with a supplication, you should offer the same supplication for him, so that you have received nothing from him in return. This is so even though they had not been asked to give.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“No wealth has benefited me as much as Abū Bakr’s.”

He spent it seeking the Face of Allah, as Allah has stated concerning him, seeking no reward from any created being—neither a prophet nor anyone else—whether through supplication or intercession.

As for the saying, “They will have their day in the Hereafter—and what a day it will be!” this is a lie. Rather, triumph belongs to whoever is a believer who fears Allah, whether poor or rich. Allah Most High says:

“On the Day the Hour comes, they will be divided.”

“As for those who believe and do righteous deeds”—the two verses.

Allah Most High also says:

“Indeed, the righteous will be in bliss, and indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.”

And Allah Most High says:

“Shall We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who spread corruption on earth? Or shall We treat those who fear Allah like the wicked?”

There are many similar passages in the Quran.

Moreover, the believers—the prophets and all the other allies of Allah—intercede for no one except with Allah’s permission. As Allah Most High says:

“Who can intercede with Him except by His permission?”

And He says:

“They intercede only for those with whom He is pleased.”

And Allah Most High says:

“On that Day, all authority belongs to Allah.”

Whoever does a kindness to a created being, hoping that this being will reward him on the Day of Resurrection, is among those who lose most through their deeds: those whose efforts in this worldly life have gone astray while they think they are doing good. Rather, the only One who rewards deeds on that Day is the One, the All-Subduing
