are no more destructive to it than a man’s eagerness for wealth and status is to his religion.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a sound hadith.”

Thus, a man’s eagerness for wealth and status corrupts his religion. As for mere love residing in the heart, if a person does what Allah has commanded, refrains from what He has forbidden, fears standing before his Lord, and restrains himself from desire, Allah does not punish him for such love when it is not accompanied by action. Nor is he punished for accumulating wealth if he fulfils the obligations attached to it and does not acquire it through unlawful means. Nevertheless, giving away surplus wealth and contenting oneself with what suffices is better and safer: it leaves the heart freer, focuses one’s concerns, and is more beneficial in this world and the Hereafter.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Whoever begins the day with this world as his greatest concern, Allah will throw his affairs into disarray, place his poverty before his eyes, and nothing of this world will come to him except what has been decreed for him. But whoever begins the day with the Hereafter as his greatest concern, Allah will place richness in his heart, set his affairs in order, and this world will come to him despite itself.”
