Shaykh ʿAdī ibn Musāfir ibn Sakhr was a righteous man and had righteous followers. Among his associates, however, were some whose extreme excesses led them into grievous disbelief. I have seen a booklet brought by his followers containing his genealogy and the chain of transmission of his spiritual path, and I found both inconsistent.
As for his genealogy, they said: “ʿAdī ibn Musāfir ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Mūsā ibn Marwān ibn Ahmad ibn Marwān ibn al-Hakam ibn Marwān al-Umawī.” This is unquestionably false, for it is impossible that only five people should separate him from Marwān ibn al-Hakam.
As for the cloak of initiation, they said: “He visited the spiritually knowledgeable shaykh ʿUqayl al-Manbijī, who personally invested him with the cloak. Shaykh ʿUqayl received the cloak from Shaykh Maslama al-Mardajī, and Shaykh Maslama received it from Shaykh Abū Saʿīd al-Kharrāz.”
