whose transmitters are unknown, anything not known to have come from him. What, then, if he is credited with something known to be a lie and a fabrication against him? Those familiar with his Sunnah and life unanimously agree that this is a lie fabricated against him and against ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him. Their claim that this garment descended in a chest is among the most obvious lies, by the agreement of those familiar with his Sunnah.

The “clothing that covers one’s nakedness” means anything that covers the private parts, whatever kind of permissible clothing it may be. Allah Most High revealed this verse because the polytheists used to circumambulate the House naked, saying, “We will not circumambulate in clothes in which we have disobeyed Allah.” So Allah Most High revealed this verse, and He revealed His words:

“Take your adornment at every place of prayer.”

The falsehood here is even more obvious than in the account concerning the wearing of the patched cloak: that the Prophet—may Allah Most High bless him and grant him peace—went into ecstasy until his mantle fell from his outer garment; that he distributed the pieces of cloth among his Companions; that Gabriel came to him and said, “Your Lord asks for His share of the collar of poverty”; and that he hung it from the Throne. This too is a lie, by the agreement of those knowledgeable in the matter.

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and his Companions never gathered to listen to handclapping, frame drums or flutes, or to dance. No garment fell from him on such an occasion, nor did he distribute it among his Companions. Everything narrated to this effect is a fabricated lie, by the agreement of those familiar with his Sunnah.
