Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Also in Sahīh Muslim, ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Amr said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘Allah wrote the decrees of creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.’ He added, ‘And His Throne was over the water.’”

In Sunan Abī Dāwūd, ‘Ubāda ibn al-Sāmit said to his son:

“My son, you will not taste the reality of faith until you know that what befell you could not have missed you, and what missed you could not have befallen you. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:

‘When Allah first created the Pen, He said to it, “Write.” It asked, “My Lord, what shall I write?” He replied, “Write the decrees of everything until the Hour comes.”’

“My son, I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘Whoever dies believing otherwise is not of me.’”

Al-Tirmidhī related it through another chain from al-Walīd ibn ‘Ubāda, who said:

“He—meaning his father—summoned me as he was dying and said, ‘My son, fear Allah, and know that if you fear Allah, you will believe in Allah and in the divine decree in its entirety, both its good and its evil. If you die believing otherwise, you will enter the Fire. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:

“When Allah first created the Pen, He said, ‘Write.’ It asked, ‘What shall I write?’ He replied, ‘Write the decree: all that has been and all that will be, forever.’”’”

Al-Tirmidhī also related from Abū Khuzāma (1), from his father:

“A man came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked, ‘What do you say about healing invocations we ask to have recited, medicines with which we treat ourselves, and protective measures we take? Do they avert anything of the decree of Allah Most High?’ He replied, ‘They are part of Allah’s decree.’”

Yet what is established in predetermination is only that which does not yet exist, is possible, and will come into being. As for that which does not exist
