Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

by virtue of his firm resolve and to the extent of his ability. Likewise, a fighter needs someone to look after his family in his absence. Whoever takes good care of his family is therefore also a fighter. Similarly, fasting requires abstention, but it also requires the evening meal with which the fast is completed; otherwise, someone unable to have an evening meal would be unable to fast.

Another example is his saying in the authentic hadith:

“When a woman spends from her husband’s wealth without being wasteful, she receives a reward for what she spends, and her husband receives an equal reward, without either diminishing the other’s reward in the least.”

Likewise, he said in the hadith narrated by Abū Mūsā:

“The trustworthy treasurer who willingly gives what he has been instructed to give, fully and undiminished, is one of those giving charity.”

Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both recorded it. This is because the trustworthy treasurer’s willing delivery of what he has been instructed to give, without diminishing it, necessarily involves a firm resolve that accords with the intention of the person giving the instruction. He has done what lies within his ability—namely, carrying out the instruction—and thus becomes one of those giving charity.

Also belonging to this category is the hadith of Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī, narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Mājah from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said:

“This world is for four kinds of people: a man whom Allah has granted knowledge and wealth, who uses it in obedience to Allah. Another man said, ‘If I had what so-and-so has, I would do as he does.’ The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘They are equal in reward.’”

Al-Tirmidhī narrated a longer version and graded it good and authentic. This equality with regard to “reward and burden of sin” describes the case of someone who said this
