Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“If you can act with contentment and certainty, then do so. If you cannot, there is much good in patiently enduring what you dislike.”

As for being content with disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience, the position of the leading scholars of the religion is that one must not be content with these things, for Allah is not pleased with them. As He says:

“He does not approve of disbelief for His servants.”

And He says:

“Allah does not love corruption.”

He, Most High, also says:

“Even if you are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.”

He, Most High, also says:

“His recompense is Hell, where he will remain forever. Allah is angry with him, has cursed him, and has prepared for him a tremendous punishment.”

And He says:

“That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked what pleased Him, so He rendered their deeds worthless.”

He, Most High, also says:

“Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the disbelievers the Fire of Hell, where they will remain forever. It is sufficient for them.”

He, Most High, also says:

“Evil indeed is what their souls have sent ahead for them: Allah is displeased with them, and they will remain in punishment forever.”

He, Most High, also says:

“So when they angered Us, We exacted retribution upon them.”

If Allah, glorified is He, is not pleased with what they have done, but is instead displeased by it, and is displeased and angry with them, how could it be prescribed for a believer to be content with it and not feel displeasure and anger at what displeases and angers Allah?

“Two groups” of people have gone astray here. “One group” consists of practitioners of speculative theology who affiliate themselves with the Sunnah. In their debates with the Qadariyyah, they supposed that the True One’s love, pleasure, anger, and displeasure all amount to His will, and they had
