The Quran, the Sunnah, and reports from the early generations of the Muslim community have indicated the kinds of remembrance of Allah and supplication to Him that are prescribed and recommended, as they have for other acts of worship. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explained the relative merits of different forms of remembrance. For example, in the authentic hadith narrated by Muslim and others from Samurah ibn Jundub, he said:

“The best words after the Quran are four—and they are themselves from the Quran: Glory be to Allah; all praise is due to Allah; none has the right to be worshipped but Allah; and Allah is the Greatest. It does not matter which of them you begin with.”

In his Sahīh, Muslim also narrates that Abū Dharr said:

“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked, ‘Which words are best?’ He replied, ‘Those Allah has chosen for His angels: Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him.’”

In Ibn Abī al-Dunyā’s Kitāb al-Dhikr (The Book of Remembrance) and other works, a report traced back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, states:

“The best remembrance is ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ and the best supplication is ‘All praise
