the believers from the plotting of their hypocritical enemies.

Allah Most High also says:

“Yes indeed! If you are patient and mindful of Allah, and they come upon you at once, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels bearing marks of distinction.”

He thus made it clear that, with patience and mindfulness of Allah, He reinforces them with angels and grants them victory over the enemies who fight them.

Allah Most High also says:

“You will surely be tested in your possessions and yourselves, and you will surely hear much abuse from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah. But if you are patient and mindful of Allah, that is indeed a matter requiring firm resolve.”

He informed them that their enemies among the polytheists and the People of the Scripture would inevitably harm them with their tongues. He also informed them that being patient and mindful of Allah is a matter requiring firm resolve. Patience and mindfulness of Allah therefore ward off the evil of enemies who openly display their hostility—whether they inflict harm with their tongues or their hands—as well as the evil of enemies who conceal their hostility, namely the hypocrites. This conduct, which was the character and way of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the most perfect course.

As for someone who sometimes desires what Allah loves and sometimes what He does not love, or someone who desires neither, both fall short of the character of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, even if neither incurs any sin. An example is someone who seeks the gratification of desire, anger, and retaliation within the bounds of what is permissible, as was characteristic of some prophets and righteous people. Although this is permissible and entails no sin, the character of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is more perfect.
