Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

he migrated to Medina and was given permission to fight, he fought them with his own hands.

This accords with the report narrated in Sahīh al-Bukhārī and Sahīh Muslim from Abū Hurayrah, and also known through the narration of Umar ibn al-Khattāb, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), concerning the debate between Adam and Moses. When Moses blamed Adam for having caused himself and his descendants to be expelled from Paradise through the sin he had committed, Adam answered that this had been decreed for him long before he was created. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.”

This was because Moses’ reproach of Adam did not concern Allah’s right, but rather the calamity that had befallen him and other human beings because of that deed. Adam therefore explained to him that this was something decreed and bound to happen. When calamities befall Allah’s servants, they are commanded to be patient, for that is what benefits them. Blaming those who caused these calamities brings them no benefit.

Likewise, when they miss out on things that would benefit them, they are commanded to consider the divine decree; regret and sorrow bring no benefit. Whatever the divine decree has brought about—whether the loss of some benefit or the occurrence of some harm—they should view it in light of that decree. As for whatever results from their own deeds, they should strive to repent of their sins and mend their ways in the future. This benefits them and is within their power, with Allah’s help.
