Anas said:
“I served the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for ten years. He never once uttered a word of irritation to me. He never said about anything I had done, ‘Why did you do that?’ or about anything I had not done, ‘Why did you not do that?’ If a member of his household rebuked me for something, he would say, ‘Leave him alone. Had something been decreed, it would have happened.’”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the best of creation and the master of the children of Adam. His is the rank of nearness to Allah in every station. His state was neither to will nothing nor to will everything that occurred, just as he did not follow his own desires. Rather, he was free of both these extremes. Allah Most High said:
“Nor does he speak from desire.”
“It is nothing but revelation sent down.”
Allah Most High also said:
“And when Allah’s servant stood up to call upon Him.”
And He said:
“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant.”
And He said:
“Glory be to Him who took His servant by night.”
What is meant by ‘His servant’ is one who worships Him and obeys His command. Otherwise, all created beings are servants in the sense that they are subjected to Him, created by Him, and governed by Him.
Allah said to His Prophet:
“And worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.”
Al-Hasan al-Basrī said, “Allah has appointed no end to the believer’s deeds short of death.”
Allah Most High also said to him:
“And indeed, you are of sublime character.”
Ibn ʿAbbās and those who agreed with him, such as Ibn ʿUyaynah and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, explained this as following a sublime religion. ‘Religion’ means doing what one has been commanded to do.
ʿĀʾishah said:
“His character was the Quran.”
This was narrated by Muslim. She also related that he would neither punish nor exact retribution for his own sake, but he would punish for Allah’s sake
