as they truly are.”
It is authentically reported that Allah Most High says:
“My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary acts of worship until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. Through Me he hears, through Me he sees, through Me he grasps, and through Me he walks.”
Furthermore, Allah—glorified and exalted is He—created His servants with an innate inclination to pure faith: love of what is right and hatred of what is wrong. So long as this innate disposition has not been altered, hearts are naturally inclined to the truth. If this disposition is strengthened by true faith and illuminated by the light of the Quran, yet the implications of the outward scriptural evidence remain unclear, and a person finds his heart favoring one of two courses, this is among the strongest indications for someone in his position. That is because Allah has taught the Quran and faith. Allah Most High says:
“It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger”—to the end of the verse.
Then He says:
“And thus We have revealed to you a spirit by Our command. You did not know what the Book was, nor faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants.”
Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said: “We learned faith, then we learned the Quran and thereby increased in faith.”
The two Sahīh collections relate from Hudhayfah that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Allah sent down trust into the very roots of men’s hearts; then they learned from the Quran and learned from the Sunnah.”
Al-Tirmidhī and others also transmit the hadith of al-Nawwās from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace
