while leaving others undone, provided that what is omitted is not a condition for the validity of what is performed—as faith is a condition for the validity of other deeds. Allah Most High says:

“Whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it as he ought, while being a believer—such people will have their striving appreciated.”

And He Most High says:

“Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer—such people will enter Paradise.”

And He says:

“Whoever among you turns away from his religion and dies a disbeliever—their deeds will come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter. They will be the inhabitants of the Fire, abiding there forever.”

(The second principle)

If someone has committed sins and repents of some but not others, his repentance entails forgiveness only for those of which he has repented. As for those of which he has not repented, he remains subject to the ruling applicable to someone who has not repented, not to someone who has. I know of no disagreement concerning this except in the case of a disbeliever who embraces Islam. His acceptance of Islam includes repentance from disbelief, so through Islam he is forgiven the disbelief of which he has repented. But is he also forgiven the sins he committed while a disbeliever and of which he has not repented after embracing Islam? There are two well-known views on this:

(The first)

He is forgiven everything, because of the unrestricted wording of the Prophet’s statement—may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“Islam wipes away whatever came before it.”

Narrated by Muslim. This is also supported by the words of Allah Most High:

“Tell those who disbelieve that if they desist, their past will be forgiven.”

(The second view)

His acceptance of Islam entitles him to forgiveness only for that of which he has repented;
