Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

to attribute to Muhammad the sins of all the prophets and to say that His words:

“so that Allah may forgive your past and future sins”

mean the sins of the prophets and their communities before you, since he will intercede for all creation on the Day of Resurrection. He is the master of the children of Adam, and he said:

“I am the master of the children of Adam, without boasting. Adam and all those beneath him will be under my banner on the Day of Resurrection. I am the spokesman of the prophets when they arrive, and their leader when they assemble.”

In that case, attributing his sin to Muhammad would not be unique to Adam. Rather, according to these people’s position, the sins of all people, earlier and later, would become his sins.

If someone says, “Allah has not forgiven the sins of all communities,” the reply is: “Nor has He forgiven the sins of everyone in his own community.”

The fourth consideration:
Allah has distinguished between his sin and the sins of the believers by saying:

“Seek forgiveness for your sin, and for the believing men and women.”

How, then, could the believers’ sins be his sins?

The fifth consideration:
It is established in an authentic report that when this verse was revealed, the Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is for you, but what is there for us?” Allah then revealed:

“He is the One who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers so that they might increase in faith along with their existing faith.”

This shows that the Messenger and the believers understood that His words:

“so that Allah may forgive your past and future sins”

applied specifically to him, not to his community.

The sixth consideration:
Allah has not forgiven the sins of everyone in his community. Rather, it has been established
