The Sunan also report from Alī that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was brought a mount to ride. He praised Allah and said:

“Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could not have controlled it ourselves. And surely to our Lord we shall return.”

Then he proclaimed Allah’s greatness and praised Him, before saying:

“Glory be to You! I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.”

Then he laughed and said:

“The Lord marvels at His servant when he says, ‘Forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.’ He says, ‘My servant knows that none forgives sins but Me.’”

Allah Most High has said:

“Seek forgiveness for your sin, and for the believing men and women.”

And He has said:

“Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, so that Allah may forgive your past and future sins.”

It is established in the two Sahīhs, in the hadith of intercession, that the Messiah will say:

“Go to Muhammad, a servant whose past and future sins Allah has forgiven.”

The Sahīh also reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would stand in prayer until his feet swelled. He was asked, “Do you do this when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins?” He replied:

“Should I not be a grateful servant?”

The texts of the Quran and Sunnah on this subject are numerous and mutually corroborating. There are also many reports concerning it from the Companions, the Successors, and the scholars of the Muslims. Those who dispute this, however, reinterpret these texts in the manner of the Jahmiyyah and the Bātiniyyah, as has been done by those who have written on this subject. Their interpretations make it clear to anyone who
