the general answer is as follows:

Whoever claims that any shaykh will deliver his disciples from punishment on the Day of Resurrection has thereby claimed that his shaykh is superior to Muhammad ibn Abd Allāh, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Whoever says this must be called upon to repent; if he repents, well and good; otherwise, he is to be put to death.

For it is established in an authentic hadith that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“O Fātimah, daughter of Muhammad, I cannot protect you at all against Allah. O Safiyyah, aunt of Allah’s Messenger, I cannot protect you at all against Allah. O Abbās, uncle of Allah’s Messenger, I cannot protect you at all against Allah. Ask me for whatever you wish of my wealth.”

It is also established in an authentic collection that he said:

“Let me not find any of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a bellowing camel upon his neck, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, help me!’ I will say, ‘I cannot protect you at all against Allah. I have conveyed the message to you.’”—referring to the hadith in full.

Similar statements are reported in other sayings. If Allah’s Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, says such things to his household and his Companions among the Emigrants and the Helpers, who believed in him, honored him, and supported him—saying that he cannot protect them at all against Allah—how can such a claim be made about a shaykh whose highest possible standing is to be among those who follow them in righteousness?

Allah Most High has said:

“And what will make you realize what the Day of Judgment is?”

“Again, what will make you realize what the Day of Judgment is?”

“A Day when no soul will have any power to help another; all command that Day belongs to Allah.”

And He said:

“And fear a Day when no soul will avail another in any way.”

There are other texts of the Quran and Sunnah to the same effect. It is known that, on the Day of Resurrection, the prophets and others can do nothing beyond intercession.

It is established in an authentic collection that “People will come to Adam seeking his intercession, and he will say, ‘Myself! Myself!’ Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus will say the same—these are the messengers of firm resolve—
