Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

But if a person is afflicted with passionate love, remains chaste, and is patient, he is rewarded for his fear of Allah. It has been related in a hadith:

“Whoever falls passionately in love, remains chaste, conceals it, and is patient, then dies, is a martyr.”

This is known through the narration of Yahyā al-Qattāt, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ‘Abbās, as a report traced back to the Prophet. However, it is open to question and cannot be used as evidence. Nevertheless, the evidence of the revealed law establishes that if a person refrains from forbidden looks, words, and deeds, conceals his passion and does not speak of it, thereby avoiding unlawful speech—whether complaining to a created being, publicizing indecency, or making some overture to the beloved—and patiently perseveres in obedience to Allah, refrains from disobeying Him, and bears the pain of passionate love in his heart as an afflicted person bears the pain of his affliction, then he is among those who fear Allah and are patient:

“Indeed, whoever fears Allah and is patient—Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.”

The same applies to the disease of envy and other diseases of the soul. When the soul seeks what Allah hates, and a person restrains it out of fear of Allah, he is among those included in His words:

“But as for the one who fears standing before his Lord and restrains his soul from desire, Paradise will be his refuge.”

When the soul loves something, it strives to obtain it by whatever means it can, even undertaking many things that are all steps toward that end. Whoever harbours blameworthy love or hatred and acts upon it is sinful. For example, a person may hate someone out of envy and consequently harm those connected to him, either by withholding their rights or by committing aggression against them; or out of love
