And injustice is of “three kinds”: all injustice is a disease of the heart, while justice is its health and soundness.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal said to someone, “If you were sound, you would fear no one.” That is, your fear of created beings arises from a disease within you, such as the disease of associating partners with Allah or committing sins.

The foundation of the heart’s soundness is its life and illumination. Allah Most High says:

“Is one who was dead, then We gave him life and provided him with light by which to walk among people, like one who is in darkness from which he cannot emerge?”

Thus, Allah mentions the life and light of hearts, and their death and darkness, in several places. For example, He says:

“To warn whoever is alive, and so that the word may be fulfilled against the disbelievers.”

And Allah Most High says:

“O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.”

Then He says:

“And know that Allah intervenes between a person and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.”

And Allah Most High says:

“He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living.”

One instance of this is that He brings forth a believer from a disbeliever and a disbeliever from a believer. An authentic hadith states:

“The likeness of a house in which Allah is remembered and a house in which Allah is not remembered is that of the living and the dead.”

Another authentic hadith states:

“Perform some of your prayers in your homes, and do not turn them into graves.”

Allah Most High has also said:

“Those who deny Our signs are deaf and mute, in darkness.”

He—glorified be He—mentioned the verse of light and the verse of darkness, saying:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth
