For this reason, one of the early generations said:

“Whoever wishes to be the strongest of people should put his trust in Allah.”

In the two Sahīh collections, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is described in the Torah as follows:

“We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings, a warner, and a safeguard for the unlettered. You are My servant and My messenger; I have named you ‘the one who trusts in Allah.’ He is neither harsh nor hard-hearted, nor does he raise his voice in the marketplaces. He does not repay evil with evil; rather, he repays evil with good, pardoning and forgiving. I will not take his soul until, through him, I have set the crooked religion straight and opened blind eyes, deaf ears, and closed hearts, through their saying: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.’”

For this reason, it is reported that the bearers of the Throne were only able to bear it by saying, “There is no might nor power except through Allah.” It is established in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“These words are one of the treasures of Paradise.”

Allah Most High says:

“Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him.”

And He Most High says:

“Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but this only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.’”

Through to His words:

“So do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers.”

In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him), commenting on the words, “And they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs,’” said: “Abraham, Allah’s close friend, said these words when he was cast into the fire, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said them when people told them, ‘The people have gathered against you.’”

And (a second category: those who recognize the lordship of the True One and their dependence on Him, and seek His help, yet do so according to their own desires and inward experiences, without regard for the reality of what He commands and forbids, what pleases or angers Him, and what He loves. This is the condition of many who profess spiritual poverty and many Sufis. For this reason, they often
