Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Shaykh al-Islām Taqī al-Dīn Abū al-ʿAbbās Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah Most High have mercy on him, was asked about the servant:

Is he able to obey Allah if he wills to do so? If he wills to refrain from sin, is he able to refrain from it? When he does good, is he to attribute it to Allah, and when he does evil, to himself?

He replied:

Praise be to Allah. Yes, if the servant resolutely wills to perform the obedience Allah has required of him, he is able to do so. Likewise, if he resolutely wills to refrain from the sin forbidden to him, he is able to do so. Muslims and the followers of all other religions agree on this—even the leading Jabriyyah (determinists). Indeed, this is necessarily known to be part of the religion of Islam. It is disputed only by some extreme “Jabriyyah,” who maintain that the revealed law commands what is intrinsically impossible. They cite as evidence Allah’s command to Abū Lahab to believe in that which entails that he will not believe.

This position contradicts the consensus of the leading scholars of Islam, including the four imams and others, the leading scholars of hadith, the masters of Sufism, and others. It also contradicts the consensus of the leading theologians, whether proponents of negation or affirmation.

The consensus of the Muʿtazilah and those like them on this is evident. The same is true of the leading proponents of affirmation among the theologians:
