Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The point here is His saying:

“Be patient with your Lord’s judgment.”

The harm they have inflicted upon you is among the things decreed for you, so be patient with His judgment, even though they have wronged you. This patience is greater than patience with what befell the prophets and what was done to them. He also says:

“So be patient with your Lord’s judgment, and do not be like the companion of the whale, who called out in anguish.”

And He says:

“And remember the man of the whale, when he went away in anger, thinking We would not constrain him, then called out in the darkness.”

Whether his anger was directed at his people or at his Lord, it concerned something decreed for him. In showing patience, he was being patient with his Lord’s judgment, which He had ordained and decreed, even if his distress arose only from people’s rejection of him.

The messengers said to their peoples:

“Why should we not put our trust in Allah when He has guided us to our ways? We will surely bear patiently whatever harm you inflict upon us. And in Allah let those who trust put their trust.”

Moses spoke to his people when Pharaoh had declared:

“We will kill their sons and spare their women, and we have absolute power over them.”

“Moses said to his people, ‘Seek help from Allah and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah; He grants it as an inheritance to whomever He wills of His servants. And the final outcome is for those who fear Him.’”

And He says:

“So be patient. Indeed, Allah’s promise is true, and seek forgiveness for your sin.”

Allah Most High also says:

“As for those who emigrated for Allah’s sake after being wronged, We will surely grant them a good dwelling in this world, but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they knew.”

“Those who are patient and put their trust in their Lord.”

These people were wronged and patiently endured the injustice inflicted upon them. The occasion of this verse’s revelation concerned those who emigrated to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Yet it applies generally to everyone who possesses these qualities.
