Whoever says that Adam did not disobey is denying the Quran and must be called upon to repent; if he does not repent, he is put to death. For Allah said:
“Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray.”
Disobedience means contravening Allah’s revealed command. Whoever contravenes the command with which Allah sent His Messengers and revealed His Books has disobeyed, even though his action falls within what Allah has destined and decreed. These people imagined that disobedience means going beyond Allah’s decree. But this is impossible, for no created being can go beyond Allah’s decree. If disobedience meant only this, then neither Iblīs, Pharaoh, the people of Noah, ʿĀd, Thamūd, nor any of the disbelievers would be disobedient either, because they all fall within Allah’s decree.
The person who says this is then beaten and humiliated. If he complains of being wronged by whoever treated him this way, he is told: “The person who did this is not disobedient, for he falls within Allah’s decree, like all other created beings.” Whoever makes this claim contradicts himself and cannot maintain a consistent position.
