and He guides those destined for bliss towards their bliss
Through sincere deeds performed in hope and fear.

The command of creation’s God is plainly the means
By which He leads those destined for bliss towards happiness.

For whoever is destined for happiness, His commands take effect
By making righteous deeds easy for him.

But whoever is destined for misery attains no happiness
Through command or prohibition, for misery has been decreed.

The servant cannot escape what has been decreed for him,
Yet he chooses what is good or shameful.

He is not compelled, bereft of will;
Rather, he wills through a will created in him.

Among the most wondrous things is the creation of a will
Through which he comes to choose guidance over error.

Thus your question, “Did he choose to abstain for a wise purpose?”
Is like asking, “Did he choose to cease willing?”

I choose not to choose a deed of error;
Were I to achieve such abstention, I would attain repentance.

This is possible, but it depends
On what Allah wills of the one endowed with will.
