Moses. Allah Most High says:

“When they are told, ‘Believe in what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us’”—to the end of the verse.

He also says:

“Those who were given the Scripture did not become divided until after clear evidence had come to them.”

And He says:

“They did not become divided until after knowledge had come to them, out of mutual transgression.”

Thus, He described them in terms similar to those in which He described Pharaoh, and set over them those through whom He exacted retribution from them. Allah Most High says concerning Pharaoh:

“Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land”—to the end of the verse.

For this reason, Allah Most High says:

“That home of the Hereafter We reserve for those who desire neither exaltation in the land nor corruption. The ultimate outcome belongs to the God-fearing.”

Allah, glorified is He, created His creatures only to worship Him: to remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him. He sent the messengers and revealed the Scriptures so that they would worship Him alone, all devotion would be to Allah, and Allah’s word would be supreme. Allah Most High says:

“We never sent a messenger before you without revealing to him: ‘There is no deity but Me, so worship Me.’”

And He says:

“Ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: Did We appoint gods besides the Most Merciful to be worshipped?”

He commanded all the messengers to uphold this and not become divided over it, saying:

“Indeed, this religion of yours is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.”

He also says:

“O messengers, eat of good things and do righteous deeds. Indeed, I know all that you do.”

“And indeed, this religion of yours is one religion”—to the end of the verse.

Qatāda said: “That is, your religion is one, and your Lord is one, while the prescribed laws differ.” Al-Dahhāk said the same. It is reported from Ibn ‘Abbās that this means: “Your religion is one religion.” Ibn Abī Hātim said: “Something similar was also reported from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, Qatāda, and ‘Abd al-Rahmān.” Al-Hasan said: “He made clear to them what they should avoid and what they should do, then said: ‘This way of yours is one way.’” The same was stated by
