which was foreknown to occur, while the supplication that does not occur is that which was foreknown not to occur.
If it is asked, “What, then, is the benefit of commanding supplication that is foreknown to occur?” the reply is:
The command itself, like other causes, is a cause of compliance with what is commanded. Supplication is a cause that repels affliction: if it is stronger than the affliction, it repels it; if the cause of the affliction is stronger, it does not repel it, but lessens and weakens it. This is why prayer, supplication, seeking forgiveness, giving charity, and freeing slaves have been enjoined at times of eclipses and other signs. And Allah knows best.
