The Book of Divine Decree
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. All praise belongs to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon him after whom there is no prophet.
Shaykh al-Islām Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah bless his resting place—said:
Section on “The Power of the Lord,” the Almighty and Majestic (*)
Muslims and the adherents of all other religions agree that Allah has power over all things, as the Quran declares in very many places. I have refuted those who deny the Lord’s power at length in several places, including what we have written on al-Arbaʿīn and al-Muhassal, in the commentary on al-Asbahāniyyah, and elsewhere. We have also discussed what al-Rāzī and others have said
(*) Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd said (p. 68):
Several points should be noted here:
First: This chapter by Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him—is abridged, as indicated by certain expressions in the abridgment, such as:
1. P. 30: “He goes on to say: In Sahīh al-Bukhārī…”
2. Also p. 30: “He goes on to say: Moreover, the eternal, beginningless…”
3. P. 31: “He goes on to say: The point here…”
4. P. 46: “He goes on to say: Whoever interprets this verse…”
These expressions indicate that passages from the Shaykh’s discussion—may Allah have mercy on him—have been omitted. I have not found the original version of this chapter among his published works. Allah knows best.
Second: On p. 14, he quotes al-Baghawī—may Allah have mercy on him—explaining al-hard (resolve): “Al-Qurtubī, Mujāhid, and ‘Ikrima said: With an agreed plan they had devised among themselves… Abū ‘Ubayda and al-Qutaybī said: They set out, resolved within themselves, with intent—that is, to deny the poor [their share]…”
I say: “Al-Qurtubī” is a scribal error; the correct reading is “al-Qurazī,” namely Muhammad ibn Ka‘b. What he quotes from Abū ‘Ubayda and al-Qutaybī appears in al-Baghawī as follows: “Abū ‘Ubayda and al-Qutaybī said: They set out with the intention of denying the poor [their share].” See Tafsīr al-Baghawī, 4:380.
Third: On p. 32, he says: “In another hadith: ‘Whoever says: Praise be to Allah, my Lord; I associate nothing with Him. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.’” The compiler—may Allah have mercy on him—indicated that there is a blank at this point in the original.
I say: It appears to me that the blank corresponds to the remainder of this hadith, whose wording is: “No Muslim servant says in the morning, ‘Praise be to Allah, with whom I associate nothing, and I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ without his sins being forgiven until evening. If he says it in the evening, his sins are forgiven until morning.”
