and similar figures among the polytheists’ scholars and spiritual masters who serve the disbelievers among the Turks, the Indians al-Jawār, and others, experience these satanic phenomena more frequently. One of them rises into the air and tells them of unseen matters. The frame drum used to accompany their singing keeps moving through the air and strikes the head of anyone who departs from their way, yet they see no one beating it. The vessel from which they drink passes around among them, yet they see no one carrying it. One of them may be staying somewhere and provide whoever comes to visit him with enough food for them all, serving them a variety of dishes. This is the work of devils: they steal the food from a nearby town or elsewhere and bring it to him. Such things are common among those of the Turks and other peoples who are polytheists or deficient in faith. Among the Tatars, there are many varieties of these phenomena.

As for those who have entered Islam, if they do not fully uphold Allah’s oneness and follow the Messenger, but instead invoke absent spiritual masters and seek their aid, they have a share of these satanic phenomena in proportion to what they harbour that pleases Satan. Among them are people devoted to worship and religion, yet affected by a degree of ignorance. One of them is carried away and set down at ʿArafāt with the pilgrims, without entering the consecrated state of ihrām when passing abreast of the designated entry points, spending the night at Muzdalifah, or performing the Hajj circumambulation. He thinks that he has thereby accomplished a righteous deed and received a great miracle of the kind granted to Allah’s close servants, unaware that Satan is playing tricks on him.

Such a Hajj is neither prescribed nor permissible, by the agreement of Muslim scholars. Whoever thinks that this is an act of worship and a miracle granted to Allah’s close servants is misguided and ignorant. This is why nothing of this kind ever happened to any of the prophets or Companions, for they are too exalted

وَنَحْوِ ذَلِكَ مِنْ عُلَمَاءِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَشُيُوخِهِمْ الَّذِينَ يَكُونُونَ لِلْكُفَّارِ مِنْ التُّرْكِ وَالْهِنْدِ الْجَوَارِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ تَكُونُ الْأَحْوَالُ الشَّيْطَانِيَّةُ فِيهِمْ أَكْثَرَ وَيَصْعَدُ أَحَدُهُمْ فِي الْهَوَاءِ وَيُحَدِّثُهُمْ بِأُمُورِ غَائِبَةٍ وَيَبْقَى الدُّفُّ الَّذِي يُغَنَّى لَهُمْ بِهِ يَمْشِي فِي الْهَوَاءِ وَيَضْرِبُ رَأْسَ أَحَدِهِمْ إذَا خَرَجَ عَنْ طَرِيقِهِمْ وَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَحَدًا يَضْرِبُ لَهُ وَيَطُوفُ الْإِنَاءُ الَّذِي يَشْرَبُونَ مِنْهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَرَوْنَ مَنْ يَحْمِلُهُ وَيَكُونُ أَحَدُهُمْ فِي مَكَانٍ فَمَنْ نَزَلَ مِنْهُمْ عِنْدَهُ ضَيَّفَهُ طَعَامًا يَكْفِيهِمْ وَيَأْتِيهِمْ بِأَلْوَانِ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ. وَذَلِكَ مِنْ الشَّيَاطِينِ تَأْتِيهِ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْمَدِينَةِ الْقَرِيبَةِ مِنْهُ أَوْ مِنْ غَيْرِهَا تَسْرِقُهُ وَتَأْتِي بِهِ. وَهَذِهِ الْأُمُورُ كَثِيرَةٌ عِنْدَ مَنْ يَكُونُ مُشْرِكًا أَوْ نَاقِصَ الْإِيمَانِ مِنْ التُّرْكِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ وَعِنْدَ التَّتَارِ مِنْ هَذَا أَنْوَاعٌ كَثِيرَةٌ. وَأَمَّا الدَّاخِلُونَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إذَا لَمْ يُحَقِّقُوا التَّوْحِيدَ وَاتِّبَاعَ الرَّسُولِ بَلْ دَعَوْا الشُّيُوخَ الْغَائِبِينَ وَاسْتَغَاثُوا بِهِمْ فَلَهُمْ مِنْ الْأَحْوَالِ الشَّيْطَانِيَّةِ نَصِيبٌ بِحَسَبِ مَا فِيهِمْ مِمَّا يُرْضِي الشَّيْطَانَ. وَمِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ فِيهِمْ عِبَادَةٌ وَدِينٌ مَعَ نَوْعِ جَهْلٍ يُحْمَلُ أَحَدُهُمْ فَيُوقَفُ بِعَرَفَاتِ مَعَ الْحُجَّاجِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُحْرِمَ إذَا حَاذَى الْمَوَاقِيتَ وَلَا يَبِيتُ بمزدلفة وَلَا يَطُوفُ طَوَافَ الْإِفَاضَةِ وَيَظُنُّ أَنَّهُ حَصَلَ لَهُ بِذَلِكَ عَمَلٌ صَالِحٌ وَكَرَامَةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ مِنْ كَرَامَاتِ الْأَوْلِيَاءِ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا مِنْ تَلَاعُبِ الشَّيْطَانِ بِهِ. فَإِنَّ مِثْلَ هَذَا الْحَجِّ لَيْسَ مَشْرُوعًا وَلَا يَجُوزُ بِاتِّفَاقِ عُلَمَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَمَنْ ظَنَّ أَنَّ هَذَا عِبَادَةٌ وَكَرَامَةٌ لِأَوْلِيَاءِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ ضَالٌّ جَاهِلٌ. وَلِهَذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَالصَّحَابَةِ يَفْعَلُ بِهِمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا فَإِنَّهُمْ أَجَلُّ
