its versions any mention of pilgrimage; rather, it mentions prayer, zakah and fasting, as does the hadith concerning the delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays. Also in the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah reported:
“A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed which, if I do it, will admit me to Paradise.’ He replied, ‘Worship Allah without associating anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, pay the obligatory zakah, and fast Ramadan.’
“The man said, ‘By Him in whose hand is my soul, I shall never add anything to this or subtract anything from it.’ When he turned to leave, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Whoever would be pleased to look upon a man destined for Paradise, let him look at this man.’”
This man may have been Dimām. Some hadiths mention only prayer and zakah, as in the report in the two Sahīh collections from Abū Ayyūb al-Ansārī:
“A Bedouin approached the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while he was travelling, and took hold of his she-camel’s halter—or its rein. He then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah—or O Muhammad—tell me what will bring me nearer to Paradise and keep me farther from the Fire.’
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stopped, looked at his Companions, and said, ‘He has indeed been granted success—or he has indeed been guided.’ Then he asked, ‘What did you say?’
“The man repeated his question, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied, ‘Worship Allah without associating anything with Him, establish prayer, pay zakah, and maintain the ties of kinship.’ When the man turned to leave, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘If he holds fast to what he has been commanded, he will enter Paradise.’”
This wording is found in Muslim.
Prayer and fasting are mentioned in the hadith of al-Nuʿmān ibn Qawqal, which Muslim narrated from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said:
“A man asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying, ‘Tell me, if
