Both versions are found in the two Sahīh collections, but al-Bukhārī did not mention pilgrimage in the first; instead, he mentioned fasting. The first account is more complete, and people treat the two reports as a single hadith. It seems—and Allah knows best—that al-Bukhārī regarded the mention of pilgrimage in it as an error. For Saʿd ibn Abī Bakr belong to Hawāzin, who are related to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, through marriage. The battle of Hunayn was fought against Hawāzin after the conquest of Mecca, and they all embraced Islam after the battle. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, returned the women and children to them after distributing them among the troops and securing the troops’ willing consent to this. This visit could therefore only have taken place before the conquest of Mecca, when pilgrimage had not yet been made obligatory.
The hadith of Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah mentions only prayer, zakah and fasting. It has been said that this is the hadith of Dimām. It appears in the two Sahīh collections, where Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah said:
“A man from Najd, with dishevelled hair, came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. We could hear the sound of his voice but could not understand what he was saying until he drew near to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Five prayers each day and night.’
“He asked, ‘Must I do anything beyond that?’
“He replied, ‘No, unless you choose to do more voluntarily.’
“Talhah continued: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned zakah to him. He asked, ‘Must I give anything beyond that?’ He replied, ‘No, unless you choose to give voluntarily.’ The man then turned to leave, saying, ‘By Allah, I shall neither add to this nor subtract from it.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘He will succeed if he is truthful.’”
