Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

It remains to be said:

The remaining part may or may not be a prerequisite for the part fulfilled. An example of its being a prerequisite is someone who believes in part of the Scripture and disbelieves in another part, or believes in some messengers and disbelieves in others. As Allah Most High says:

“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to make a distinction between Allah and His messengers, saying, ‘We believe in some and disbelieve in others,’ and wish to adopt a way in between—”

“They are truly the disbelievers, and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.”

The omitted part, however, may not be a prerequisite for either the existence or the acceptance of the other part. In that case, faith and hypocrisy may coexist within a person, as may some branches of faith and a branch of disbelief. Thus, it is reported in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There are four traits which, if all are present in a person, make him a pure hypocrite. Whoever possesses one of them possesses a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he speaks, he lies; when entrusted, he betrays the trust; when he makes a covenant, he breaks it; and when he disputes, he behaves wickedly.”

It is also reported in the Sahīh that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Whoever dies without having fought in battle or even contemplated doing so dies with a branch of hypocrisy.”

It is also established in the Sahīh that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Abū Dharr:

“You are a man who has a trait of pre-Islamic ignorance.”

It is also reported in the Sahīh that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There are four practices of pre-Islamic ignorance among my community that they will not abandon: boasting of ancestral standing, disparaging lineages, wailing over the dead, and seeking rain through the stars.”

It is also reported in the two Sahīh collections that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Abusing a Muslim is sinful disobedience
