they will surely say, ‘We were with you.’ Does Allah not know best what is in the hearts of all people?”

“Allah will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.”

And Allah Most High said in Surah al-Ahzāb:

“O Prophet, fear Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

In this surah, He described their conduct during the Battle of the Confederates. He also recounted some of the hypocrites’ statements, their cowardice and their panic, as Allah Most High said:

“And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease said, ‘Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion.’”

Up to His words:

“Allah certainly knows those among you who hinder others and those who say to their brothers, ‘Come to us,’ while they themselves seldom come to battle.”

“Grudging toward you, when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes rolling like someone overcome by the throes of death. But when fear departs, they assail you with sharp tongues, greedy for gain. Those have not believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds worthless. And that is easy for Allah.”

“They think the confederates have not withdrawn. If the confederates should come again, they would wish they were out in the desert among the Bedouins, asking for news of you. And even if they were among you, they would hardly fight.”

And Allah Most High said:

“If the hypocrites, those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who spread alarming rumors in Medina do not desist, We will surely set you against them; then they will remain your neighbors there only a little while.”

“Accursed, wherever they are found, they will be seized and killed with a terrible slaughter.”

Up to His words:

“So that Allah may punish the hypocritical men and women and the men and women who associate partners with Him, and turn in mercy to the believing men and women.”

And Allah Most High said in Surah al-Qitāl:

“Or do those in whose hearts is a disease think that Allah will not expose their hidden hatred?”

“If We willed, We could show them to you, and you would recognize them by their marks. Yet you will surely recognize them by the implications of their words. And Allah knows your deeds.”
