fight in the cause of Allah or defend yourselves.’”—and the following verses.
He also says in the same surah:
“O you who believe, do not take as your confidants those outside your ranks. They spare no effort to harm you and wish to see you suffer.”
The passage continues to His words:
“When they meet you, they say, ‘We believe.’ But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. Say, ‘Die in your rage.’ Indeed, Allah knows what hearts contain.”
“If something good comes your way, it distresses them; but if misfortune befalls you, they rejoice in it. Yet if you remain patient and mindful of Allah, their plotting will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah encompasses all that they do.”
Allah, exalted is He, says in Sūrat al-Nisā’:
“Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They wish to seek judgment from tāghūt, although they were commanded to reject it. Satan wishes to lead them far astray.”
“When it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turn away from you in utter aversion.”
The passage continues to His words:
“But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in their disputes, then find within themselves no resistance to your decisions and submit wholeheartedly.”
He also says:
“Why are you divided into two groups concerning the hypocrites, when Allah has caused them to relapse because of what they have earned? Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has led astray? Whoever Allah leads astray, you will never find a way for him.”
“They wish that you would disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you would all be alike. So do not take any of them as allies until they migrate in the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither an ally nor a helper from among them.”
“Except those who join a people with whom you have a treaty”—and the following verses.
He also says:
“Give the hypocrites tidings of a painful punishment.”
“Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of believers—do they seek honour with them? Indeed, all honour belongs to Allah.”
