Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattāb, used to say in his supplication to Him:

“O Allah, make all my deeds righteous, make them devoted solely to seeking Your Face, and let no one else have any share in them.”

Allah Most High says:

“Or do they have partners who have prescribed for them a religion that Allah has not authorized?”

In the two Sahīh collections, Ā’ishah relates that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours something that does not belong to it, it is rejected.”

Another wording in the Sahīh reads:

“Whoever performs a deed that does not accord with our teaching, it is rejected.”

It is also reported in the Sahīh and elsewhere that Allah Most High says:

“I have no need whatsoever of partners. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates someone else with Me, I disown it, and it belongs entirely to the one he associated with Me.”

For this reason, the jurists have said that acts of worship must be based on revealed prescription. Thus, the two Sahīh collections relate that Umar ibn al-Khattāb kissed the Black Stone and said:

“By Allah, I know that you are a stone that can neither harm nor benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kiss you, I would not have kissed you.”

Allah, glorified is He, has commanded us to follow the Messenger, obey him, remain loyal to him and love him, and to hold Allah and His Messenger dearer than all else. He has promised us His love and honour through our obedience to and love for His Messenger. Allah Most High says:

“Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’”

Allah Most High also says:

“If you obey him, you will be guided.”

And Allah Most High says:

“Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide there forever. That is the great triumph.”

There are many similar passages in the Quran.

In this matter, no one should depart from what the Sunnah has established and the revealed Law has prescribed
