is accepting the truth. You also asked about religion. Religion is worship: whenever someone belonging to a religion abandons the worship practised by its adherents without entering another religion, he is left with no religion.
You also asked about worship. Worship is obedience. Whoever obeys Allah in what He commands and prohibits has chosen to worship Allah; whoever obeys Satan in his religion and deeds has worshipped Satan. Do you not see that Allah said to those who were negligent:
‘Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan?’
Their worship of Satan consisted in obeying him in their religion.”
Asad ibn Mūsā said:
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, [from] al-Awzāʿī: Hassān ibn ʿAtiyyah narrated to us, saying: “In Allah’s Book, faith leads to deeds. Allah Most High says:
‘The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned’—to the end of the verse.
He then proceeds to their deeds, saying:
‘Those who establish prayer and spend out of what We have provided for them.’”
He said: “I also heard al-Awzāʿī say: Allah Most High says:
‘But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then they are your brothers in religion.’
Faith in Allah is professed with the tongue, and deeds affirm its truth.”
Maʿmar related from al-Zuhrī:
“We used to say: Islam is through acknowledgment, and faith is through deeds. Faith consists of words and deeds, inseparably linked: neither benefits without the other. Everyone’s words and deeds are weighed. If his deeds outweigh his words, it ascends to Allah; but if his words outweigh his deeds, it does not ascend to Allah.”
