Ibn ʿAbbās said:
“Every Muslim will be given a light on the Day of Resurrection. The hypocrite’s light, however, will be extinguished, while the believer, frightened by seeing the hypocrite’s light extinguished, will say, ‘Our Lord, perfect our light for us.’”
It is indeed as he said. This is established in the two Sahīh collections through the reports of Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him—and it is also established through other chains of transmission. Muslim also narrated it through Jābir. It is known through the report of Ibn Masʿūd—whose version is the longest—and through Abū Mūsā, in the lengthy hadith which mentions:
“On the Day of Resurrection, a proclamation will be made: ‘Let every community follow what it used to worship.’ Those who worshipped the sun will follow the sun; those who worshipped the moon will follow the moon; and those who worshipped false deities will follow those false deities. This community will remain, including its hypocrites. Allah will come to them in a form other than His form which they recognize, and He will say, ‘I am your Lord.’ They will say, ‘We seek refuge in Allah from you. We shall remain here until our Lord comes to us. When our Lord comes, we shall recognize Him.’ Then Allah will come to them in His form which they recognize and say, ‘I am your Lord.’ They will say, ‘You are our Lord,’ and will follow Him.”
One version states:
“Then He will uncover His shin.”
In another version, He says:
“‘Is there a sign between you and Him by which you would recognize Him?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ Then He will uncover His shin. Everyone who used to prostrate to Allah of his own accord will be permitted to prostrate. But Allah will make the back of everyone who used to prostrate out of hypocrisy and ostentation into one solid piece: whenever he tries to prostrate, he will fall backward. Their backs will remain like the horns of cattle. They will raise their heads, and there will be their light ahead of them and on their right. The hypocrites’ light will be extinguished, and they will say, ‘Let us borrow some of your light.’”
He thus made clear that, outwardly, the hypocrites will be gathered with the believers, just as they were with them in this world. Then, at the moment of truth, the believers will prostrate to their Lord, while the hypocrites will be unable to prostrate
