is what is required. As for whether someone may be a Muslim without being called a believer, this has already been discussed. Likewise, does Islam necessarily entail faith? This is the dispute mentioned above, which we shall explain. The Quran’s promise of Paradise and deliverance from punishment is attached specifically to faith. As for Islam alone, the Quran does not attach admission to Paradise to it. Nevertheless, Allah has made it obligatory and declared it to be His religion, besides which He accepts no other from anyone.

Allah sent all the prophets with Islam. He, Most High, says:

“Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.”

And He says:

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.”

Noah said:

“O my people, if my presence among you and my reminding you of Allah’s signs have become burdensome to you, then in Allah I have put my trust. So resolve upon your course of action, together with your partners, and let there be no uncertainty about your plan. Then carry it out against me and give me no respite.”

“But if you turn away, I have asked you for no reward. My reward rests only with Allah, and I have been commanded to be among the Muslims.”

Yet Allah has stated that none escaped punishment except the believers. He says:

“We said, ‘Load into it a pair of every kind, and your family—except those against whom the decree has already been passed—and those who believe.’ But only a few believed with him.”

And He says:

“It was revealed to Noah: ‘None of your people will believe except those who have already believed.’”

And Noah said:

“I will not drive away those who believe.”

Likewise, Allah has stated that Abraham’s religion was Islam. He, Most High, says:

“Who would turn away from the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself? We certainly chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will surely be among the righteous.”

“When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit,’ he said, ‘I have submitted to the Lord of all worlds.’”

“Abraham enjoined this upon his sons, as did Jacob: ‘O my sons, Allah has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except as Muslims.’”
