“Do not praise me excessively as the Christians praised Jesus son of Mary. I am only a servant, so say: ‘The servant of Allah and His Messenger.’”
Al-Tirmidhī narrated an authentic hadith from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in which he taught a man to supplicate, saying:
“O Allah, I ask You and seek nearness to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah, I seek nearness through you to my Lord concerning my need, that He may fulfil it for me. O Allah, accept his intercession for me.”
Al-Nasā’ī narrated a similar supplication. In al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah, it is related from ‘Uthmān ibn Hanīf:
“A blind man came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: ‘Supplicate to Allah to restore my health.’ He replied: ‘If you wish, I will supplicate; and if you wish, you may remain patient, which is better for you.’
“The man said: ‘Then supplicate to Him.’ He instructed him to perform ablution thoroughly and offer this supplication: ‘O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Messenger of Allah, O Muhammad, I have turned through you to my Lord concerning this need of mine, so that it may be fulfilled. O Allah, accept his intercession for me.’”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a sound and authentic hadith.” Al-Nasā’ī also narrated it from ‘Uthmān ibn Hanīf, with the following wording:
“A blind man said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah to restore my sight.’ He replied: ‘Go and perform ablution, then pray two units of prayer, then say: “O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I turn through you to my Lord, that He may restore my sight. O Allah, accept his intercession for me.”’ The narrator said: ‘He returned, and Allah had restored his sight.’”
Imam Ahmad said in his Musnad:
