He did not accept this from them, saying:
“Nothing has prevented their contributions from being accepted except that they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, come to prayer only lazily, and give only unwillingly.”
He also said:
“The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He deceives them. When they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing off before people, and they remember Allah only a little.”
In Sahīh Muslim, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“That is the hypocrite’s prayer! That is the hypocrite’s prayer! That is the hypocrite’s prayer! He watches the sun until, when it is between the two horns of a devil, he rises and pecks out four units of prayer, remembering Allah only a little during them.”
They would accompany the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on military campaigns, just as Ibn Ubayy went on the campaign against Banū al-Mustaliq, during which he said:
“If we return to Medina, the more honourable will surely expel the more contemptible from it.”
In the two Sahīh collections, Zayd ibn Arqam reported:
“We set out with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey during which the people suffered hardship. ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ubayy said to his companions, ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse from around him.’ He also said, ‘If we return to Medina, the more honourable will surely expel the more contemptible from it.’
“I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him. He sent for ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ubayy and questioned him, and he swore the most solemn oath that he had done no such thing. They said, ‘Zayd has lied, O Messenger of Allah.’ What they said caused me great distress, until Allah revealed confirmation of my truthfulness in ‘When the hypocrites come to you.’ The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then called them so that he might ask forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.
